Graphic Design

Graphic design is the process of visual communication and problem-solving through the use of photography and illusion. This field is considered as a subset of visual communication and communication design, but sometimes the term “graphic design” is used synchronously.

Designers create and combine the symbols, images and text to form visual representations of ideas and messages. They use typography, visual arts, and page layout techniques to create visual compositions.

The term “graphic design” first appeared in print in the 1922 essay “New Kind of Printing Calls for New Design” by William Addison Dwiggins, an American book designer in the early 20th century.


  • Graphic design is applied to everything visual, from road signs to technical schematics, from interoffice memorandumsto reference manuals.
  • Design can aid in selling a product or idea. It is applied to products and elements of company identity such as logos, colors, packaging and text as part of branding . Branding has become increasingly more important in the range of services offered by graphic designers. Graphic designers often form part of a branding team.
  • Graphic design is applied in the entertainment industry in decoration, scenery and visual story telling.


Typography includes type design, modifying type glyphs and arranging type. Type glyphs (characters) are created and modified using illustration techniques. Type arrangement is the selection of typefaces, point size, tracking (the space between all characters used), kerning (the space between two specific characters) and leading (line spacing).

Typography is performed by typesetters, compositors, typographers, graphic artists, art directors, and clerical workers. Until the digital age, typography was a specialized occupation. Certain fonts communicate or resemble stereotypical notions.

Page layout

Page layout deals with the arrangement of contents on a page, such as text layout, image placement and style. Page design has always been a consideration in printed material and more recently extended to displays such as web pages. Elements typically consist of text, pictures, and with print media)  occasionally place-holder graphics such as a dieline for elements that are not printed with ink such as die/laser cutting, foil stamping or blind embossing.

1. Visual identity graphic design

A brand is a relationship between a business or organization and its audience. A brand identity is how the organization communicates its personality, tone and essence, as well as memories, emotions and experiences. Visual identity graphic design is exactly that the visual elements of brand identity that act as the face of a brand to communicate those intangible qualities through images, shapes and color.

2. Advertising and marketing graphic design

When most people think of graphic design, they think of designs created for marketing and advertising. Companies depend on successful marketing efforts to tap into their target audience’s decision-making process. Great marketing engages people based on the wants, needs, awareness and satisfaction they have about a product, service or brand. Since people will always find visual content more engaging, graphic design helps organizations promote and communicate more effectively. Designers can specialize in a specific type of media or create a broad assortment of collateral for print, digital, and beyond. While traditionally print-centered, this role has grown to include more digital assets, especially for use in content marketing. Marketing designers work with company owners, directors, managers or marketing professionals to create assets for marketing strategies. They might work alone or as part of an in-house or creative team.

3. User interface graphic design

A user interface (UI) is how user interacts with a device or an application. UI design is the process of designing interfaces to make them easy to use and to provide a user-friendly experience. User Interface includes all of the things that user can interact with, such as the screen, keyboard and mouse. But in the context of graphic design, UI design focuses on the visual experience of the user and the design of on-screen graphic elements like buttons, menus, micro-interactions, and more.
